6 Ways to Speak English Confidently

Have you ever been in a situation when someone spoke to you in English but you couldn’t reply smoothly?

You did understand what this person said, you knew what you should say but couldn’t let any words out. Otherwise, you murmured.

Some people I know feel so nervous when it comes to speaking English. They are able to respond in a very basic conversation, but stutter when the conversation is just about to get more complex. They do understand what their speaking partner is saying, but they find it hard to speak. So, does it mean you’re not able to? Or that you are left behind? The answer is, No. You only need confidence.

Why is confidence important?

When you are confident, it makes you see yourselves better and makes you perform at your best. When you are confident, your confidence may also overcome your fear and it makes everything, including your learning pace, become much more directed.

Now you know the importance of confidence, how to achieve it?

  1. Slow Down

Speak fast like a rapper may sound like a pro, but it’s not the best way to practice your speaking skill. Find any article, or may be 1-2 pages from your favourite novel and speak out loud, slowly. This technique will not only make you practice speaking but also the pronunciation.

  1. Sing Along with Your Favourite Singers

As best as it sounds, your favourite singers can help you increase your confidence. Listen to your favourite songs, find the lyrics, and sing along with the singers. It might not help you best when you have to debate, but it is one of the ways to speak English naturally. You can install various lyrics apps on your smartphone and start doing it right away.

  1. Grammar is Not Everything

Let’s admit it, grammar is usually what makes people step back when speaking English. They are afraid to speak because they don’t know or forget the formula of ‘how to say, I go to holiday last month’ a.k.a Simple Past Tense. When someone says grammar is important, yes, I strongly agree. But at the same time, it is not everything, especially if you are at the beginner stage. When you talk to English speakers and you don’t use perfect grammar, it is understandable because you still learn. In fact, not all Native English Speakers speak perfect grammar themselves. So, what’s important is you have the courage to speak and if you want to learn more about grammar, you can learn it at the same time as well.

  1. Your Accent is Okay

Some English language learners are not only worried about grammar but also their accent. They are afraid that their accent would make their speaking become unheard. In fact, it is unnecessarily true. English is lingua franca, it is a language that is widely spoken in the world for various needs. Non-native English Speakers make up for two-third of the number of English speakers in the world, and that means Native English speakers are considered a minority. By learning a new language, you are stepping out of your comfort zone. And that should be embraced.

  1. Make Mistakes and Learn From It

It is no doubt that we will always make mistakes everytime we learn something, and when learning a language mistakes can’t be avoided either. Although sometimes making mistakes could make you feel down, don't make it discourage you. Take notes of what mistakes you made and what should be fixed. Next, you can use the notes when you practise and help you progress.

  1. Practice Speaking

Everyone agrees that the best way to practice a language is by using it. Whether it’s with your friends, classmates, coworkers, or your tutor you can practice anytime and anywhere with the help of technology. Schedule your online meeting and discuss what topic you want to bring in the meeting. You can also seek a professional English instructor for conversation class. This way, you can have a record of your progress in every meeting.

Remember, a language is used to make communication easier. Even though you are still in the beginning steps of your English language learning, you are still the champion to step out of your comfort zone.
