7 Tips on How to Learn English Effectively

English is a Lingua Franca, meaning it is the language that we use regardless wherever we are, whoever we are, and what backgrounds we have. Oftentimes, we use English to communicate at school, in English-speaking countries, working and living overseas, traveling or doing business, and even when finding pen pals. Learning a language may sound complicated and hard, but some tips below may help you to progress your English quickly.

  1. Set Your Goal(s)

Some people learn a language because they love the language and it makes them passionate about learning the language, but for some people they learn the language because they have a specific goal, like getting their education in English-speaking country. Your goal will help you define which language usage you should improve, what the best way to achieve it, and how you can progress effectively.

  1. Read, Listen and Mark

Your learning style may help a lot with your language learning goal. For instance, if you like reading, find any book genre that you like the most. If you like romance or crime genres, find books that can make you read them until the last page. The same thing goes with songs and movies. In your leisure time, listen to any favourite songs, find the lyrics, then mark and translate unfamiliar words. You can also use the same method when watching your favourite movies by pausing and finding the meaning of unfamiliar words. And, don’t get tempted using subtitles.

  1. Use your Dictionary

When learning a new language, a dictionary is a great help. It is even easier nowadays to install dictionary apps on your smartphone. Usually, there are two kinds of dictionary you can have in bookstores, a dictionary of your home language paired with English and English dictionary like Oxford dictionary. You can use the paired dictionary to help you understand the meaning of each word and use English dictionary to get a more thorough explanation. Using these both dictionaries is highly recommended.

  1. Take Notes

Your teacher might tell you this as well, in every class. It might sound classic, yet it works! When you find unfamiliar words, sometimes it’s hard to predict the meaning and makes us feel frustrated. That way, taking notes can help your memory. If you find unfamiliar words, write them in your notebook and try using it in sentences. It would be better if you use one word in more than one sentence to help you get a full understanding of the word’s meaning. Aside from sentences, you can also draw a picture, using bullet points or making a mind map. This way, it can help you understand the words better.

  1. Find a Partner

Do you understand what people say in English but have a doubt to talk? Well, you’re not alone. A lot of English language learners have the confidence in passive English but they are not confident enough to talk in English. If you have that one friend who is proficient in English, you can ask your friend to be your speaking partner. Or if you want to, enroll in an online English class to practice your speaking skill.

  1. Be Confident

Nothing is more important than your confidence. Whether it is only for casual conversation or even for studying abroad, learning a language needs the learner to be confident to take the chance. Read out loud one or two paragraphs of any articles you found. The more you listen to yourself, the more you will feel confident.

  1. Practice Makes Perfect

This is a classic idiom every teacher will always use. Practising requires you to have a specific schedule for studying, it also requires your commitment in learning a new language. You can take several online tests to practise and do self-evaluation, or seek an English teacher to guide you through your English language learning journey.
